Who Can Create and Edit Tests in Nelio A/B Testing?

By default, Nelio A/B Testing uses WordPress roles to determine who can create and manage tests.

Default Permissions

The following permissions are assigned automatically:

WordPress RolePermissions
AdministratorCan create, edit, start, stop, pause, resume, and delete every type of test, including PHP Tests. Can also manage plugin settings and the site’s subscription.
EditorCan create and manage all test types except PHP Tests. Editors can’t modify plugin settings or manage the site’s subscription.

Why Can’t Editors Create PHP Tests?

PHP Tests allow you to execute custom PHP code on your website.

Because incorrectly written PHP code can affect your site’s functionality or security, only Administrators can create and edit PHP Tests by default.

Most users won’t ever need this type of test.

Do Administrators and Editors Participate in Tests?

No.

Logged-in Administrators and Editors are automatically excluded from all tests.

They always see the control version of the tested content, and their visits and interactions aren’t included in test results.

This prevents the people creating and managing tests from influencing their own analytics.

If you need to experience a variant yourself, you can use the Debug Tools in Staging Mode or test using another browser or an incognito window while logged out.

Can I Change These Permissions?

Yes.

If your team needs different permission levels, you can customize Nelio A/B Testing’s capabilities using a WordPress role management plugin.

For example, you can:

  • allow non-editors to create tests;
  • restrict who can start or stop tests;
  • grant access to test results without allowing users to edit tests; or
  • create custom roles for marketers, designers, or developers.
