How to Create a WooCommerce Product A/B Test
A WooCommerce Product Test lets you compare different versions of a product — testing changes to its title, description, images, price, or offers — to discover which version leads to more purchases and higher revenue.
With Nelio A/B Testing, you can set up and run these tests directly from your WordPress dashboard, tracking real user behavior to make data-driven decisions that improve your store’s performance.

Step 1: Create a New WooCommerce Product Test
- In your WordPress dashboard, go to Nelio A/B Testing → Tests.
- Click Add Test.
- In the dialog, select Woo Product (under the WooCommerce category).

💡 Each variant can modify any aspect of your product — from images and descriptions to pricing and promotions.
Step 2: Describe Your Test and Define Its Scope
Start by giving your test a clear, descriptive name — for example, Product Page Image Variation or Discount Offer Comparison.
Then use the sidebar to configure:
- Description — briefly outline your hypothesis or expected outcome (e.g., “A shorter product title with a limited-time offer will increase conversions”).
- Status & Management — view the test’s status (Draft, Ready, Running, Paused) and optionally schedule start or end dates.
- Test Scope — decide where variants will appear across your store:
- ✅ Product’s page only (default): Variants appear only on the tested product’s page.
- 🔄 Everywhere in your store: Disable this checkbox to show variants across product lists, carts, checkout pages, and related-product sections.

💡 If you plan to test different prices, make sure the scope is set to “everywhere,” ensuring consistent prices across the entire site.
Step 3: Select the Product to Test
Choose the product you want to test — also known as the Control Version (Version A) – from the dropdown list, or search by product name, URL, or ID.

Step 4: Enable Price Testing (Optional)
If you want to test different prices or discounts:
- Make sure your test scope is not limited to the product page (it must be visible across your store).
- Then, enable Price Testing in the test options.

💡 This ensures pricing remains consistent for all shoppers, regardless of where the product appears.
Step 5: Create New Variants
Click New Variant to create one or more alternative versions of your product.
By default, each variant is an exact copy of the control version. You can rename them (e.g., “Variant 1 – 15% Discount”) and customize each variant as needed.

Step 6: Edit Product Variants
When editing a variant, the WordPress Product Editor opens — identical to the standard WooCommerce editor.

Depending on the product type:
- Simple Products: You can modify the name, short and long descriptions, featured image, gallery images, regular price, and sale price.
- Variable Products: You can update these attributes for each variation individually.
The Nelio A/B Testing panel on the right sidebar lets you:
- Return to the main test overview.
- Jump between the control version and other variants.
💡 Note about responsive product layouts: If your original WooCommerce product uses different designs for desktop, tablet, and mobile, remember to apply your edits separately for each device view when modifying the variant. Otherwise, only the desktop version will display the alternative layout, while the tablet and mobile versions will continue to show the original product design.
Step 7: Define Goals and Conversion Actions
WooCommerce product tests include an implicit conversion goal — a conversion occurs when a visitor purchases the tested product.
- Visits: Counted when a user views the tested product anywhere on your site.
- Conversions: Counted when the purchase is completed.

You can customize this by selecting an alternative order status (for example, Processing, Completed, or Refunded) from the dropdown menu.

If you check Track revenue (enabled by default), Nelio will also display total revenue per variant in your results. Revenue data is shown for insight purposes but is not used in statistical winner calculations — those are based purely on conversion rates.
💡 A variant may have higher conversion rates but lower total revenue if its price is reduced — consider both metrics together before deciding the winner.
In addition to the default WooCommerce goal, you can add additional goals and conversion actions — just as you do in page or post tests. This lets you also analyze how user engagement changes across the purchase journey.
For example, you might track when users:
- Visit a specific page (like the checkout or thank-you page),
- Click a button or banner, or
- Scroll to a certain depth on a sale landing page.

Step 8: Add Segmentation Rules (Optional)
Segmentation allows you to test with specific visitor groups. You can include or exclude audiences based on:
URL parameter · Referrer · Language · Location · Logged-in status · Visitor Type · Day/time · Browser · Device type · Operating system · Window Width Cookie · IP address
If you skip segmentation, all visitors to the tested page are included automatically.

Step 9: Start the Test
When everything is ready:
- Review your setup summary at the top of the page.
- Click Start.
Nelio A/B Testing will:
- Randomly assign visitors to variants.
- Track conversions anonymously via Nelio Cloud.
- Display real-time results in your dashboard.
⏯ Pause, Resume, or Stop Your Test
- Pause a running test if you need to make changes, then resume it later.
- Stop a test manually whenever you want, or let it end automatically under certain conditions such as duration, total number of visits or confidence results (available in Professional and Enterprise plans).
- Once a test is stopped, its results remain available for review.
⚠️ Important note about editing paused tests
Editing a paused test may reset or affect ongoing statistics. When in doubt, duplicate the test before resuming.
Step 10: View Results and Analyze Performance
To monitor progress, go to Nelio A/B Testing → Tests → View Results.
Summary of the results
In the right sidebar, you’ll find a quick overview of your test:
Goal selector – Choose which goal’s results to display.
Status icon – Indicates test status:
🟡 Collecting data.
🕒💛 Potential winner, low confidence
🟢🏅 Clear winner found.
🔴 No improvement over control.
Unique results – Filter duplicates.
Public results – Share a public link.
Export results – Download a CSV.
Summary – Shows status, duration, start date, and end condition.

Test Progress and Metrics
The results page includes two main tabs:
- Conversion Rate: A line chart showing conversion rate evolution for all variants. Below it, you’ll see total conversions, visits, and improvement percentages.
- Revenue: Displays cumulative revenue for each variant and overall performance improvement.
Each variant also shows:
- A thumbnail preview of the product.
- Visits, conversions, and conversion rate.
- Revenue and improvement over the control (if revenue tracking is enabled).
- A summary of the goals and conversion actions.

💡 Use both Conversion Rate and Revenue graphs together to find the most profitable version — not just the one with the most orders.
Step 11: Improve Your Web Conversion
When the test ends — either manually or automatically — review the results and click Apply next to the winning variant.

Nelio will automatically replace the original product with the winning version’s content and pricing, so all future visitors see the optimized version.
