How Do “External Page” Conversion Actions Work?
An External Page conversion action is used when you want to track users who click a link that leads away from your WordPress site—for example, links to social networks, third-party tools, partner websites, booking services, or affiliate URLs.
Because Nelio A/B Testing can only track activity on your own site, it cannot track whether the visitor actually loaded the external page. Instead, Nelio tracks the moment when the visitor clicks a link that points to an external domain.
What Is Actually Measured?
Nelio records a conversion when:
- The visitor clicks a link inside your site
- The link points to a domain that is not part of your WordPress installation
This means the conversion reflects the visitor’s intent to leave your site to visit an external destination.
What This Means in Practice
- ✔ You can track outbound link clicks
- ✔ You can compare which variants generate more external clicks
- ✘ You cannot track whether the external page was actually visited, loaded, or interacted with (because it’s outside your site)
This action is ideal for:
- Affiliate links
- “Visit our marketplace” buttons
- Social media profile links
- Booking or reservation systems
- Partner or sponsor websites
- Third-party documentation or apps
