How do I connect my LINE group with Nelio Content?

Nelio Content can publish social messages directly to a LINE group.

To connect a LINE group to Nelio Content, you will need two pieces of information:

  • Channel Access Token — used by Nelio Content to authenticate with LINE.
  • Group ID — identifies the LINE group where Nelio Content should publish your messages.

Both values are obtained from LINE’s Messaging API. Follow the steps below to create a LINE Official Account, configure the Messaging API, obtain the required values, and connect the group to Nelio Content.

Important: LINE Official Accounts are not available in all countries and regions. If LINE tells you that you cannot create an account in your current country or region, you will not be able to complete the setup from that region.

1. Sign in to LINE Developers

Open the LINE Developers Console and sign in with your LINE account or LINE Business ID.

The LINE Developers Console is where you will manage the Messaging API channel that Nelio Content will use to publish messages.

2. Create a provider

After signing in, create a Provider.

A provider is simply a container in LINE Developers that groups the channels and applications belonging to the same organization or project.

Click Create a new provider, enter a name such as your company or website name, and create it.

For example, if your website is called Example.com, you could use:

Example.com

as the provider name.

If you already have a suitable provider in LINE Developers, you can use the existing one instead.

3. Create a LINE Official Account

Inside your provider, create a Messaging API channel.

LINE will guide you through the process of creating or selecting a LINE Official Account associated with the channel.

Follow the instructions and enter the requested information, such as:

  • The name of the Official Account.
  • The company or owner.
  • Country or region.
  • Business category.

For the purposes of Nelio Content, the LINE Official Account does not need to be a verified account. An unverified Official Account can use the Messaging API as well.

Once the Official Account has been created, continue with the Messaging API configuration.

4. Enable the Messaging API

Open the newly created account in LINE Official Account Manager.

Go to:

Settings → Messaging API

and enable the Messaging API.

When LINE asks you to select a provider, choose the provider you created in the previous steps.

After completing this process, LINE creates a Messaging API channel associated with your Official Account.

Return to the LINE Developers Console, open your provider, and select the corresponding Messaging API channel.

5. Allow the Official Account to join LINE groups

Nelio Content publishes messages to a LINE group, so your Official Account must be allowed to join group chats.

Open your Messaging API channel in LINE Developers and go to the Messaging API tab.

Look for the option related to allowing the bot or Official Account to participate in group chats.

Depending on the LINE interface you see, the setting may be called something similar to:

Allow bot to join group chats

or:

Group and multi-person chats

Enable this option.

Without it, you will not be able to add your Official Account to the LINE group that you want to connect to Nelio Content.

6. Add the Official Account as a friend

Still in the Messaging API tab, LINE should display a QR code for your Official Account.

Open LINE on your phone and scan this QR code.

Add the Official Account as a friend.

This makes it easier to add the Official Account to the group in the next step.

7. Create a temporary webhook to discover the Group ID

LINE does not normally display a group’s internal Group ID in the LINE application.

Instead, LINE includes the Group ID inside the webhook events generated when something happens in that group.

For this reason, we need to temporarily configure a webhook so that we can inspect one of these events.

You do not need to create your own server or write any code for this.

You can use a temporary webhook inspection service such as:

https://webhook.is/test

A webhook inspection service gives you a temporary public URL and displays the HTTP requests that are sent to it. This allows you to see the JSON data that LINE sends when someone writes a message in the group.

Create the temporary webhook URL

Open:

https://webhook.is/test

The website will provide you with a unique webhook URL.

It will look similar to:

https://webhook.is/xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxCode language: JavaScript (javascript)

The exact URL will be different for you.

Keep the webhook.is page open in your browser, because incoming requests from LINE will appear there.

Copy the temporary webhook URL to your clipboard.

This URL is only needed during the setup process. Nelio Content does not need webhook.is in order to publish messages once you have obtained the Group ID.

8. Configure the temporary URL in LINE

Return to the LINE Developers Console and open:

Your Provider → Your Messaging API Channel → Messaging API

Find the Webhook settings section.

Paste the temporary URL you obtained from webhook.is into the Webhook URL field.

For example:

https://webhook.is/xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxCode language: JavaScript (javascript)

Save the changes.

Make sure that Use webhook is enabled.

LINE may also provide a button such as Verify for testing the webhook URL. You can use it to make sure LINE can reach the temporary endpoint.

If the verification succeeds, your webhook is ready.

At this point, LINE will send Messaging API events to webhook.is, where you will be able to inspect them directly in your browser.

9. Add the Official Account to your LINE group

Open the LINE application.

Go to the group where you want Nelio Content to publish messages.

Add the LINE Official Account that you created earlier as a member of the group.

If you cannot add it, go back to the LINE Official Account or Messaging API settings and verify that joining group chats is enabled.

Once the Official Account is inside the group, send a new message to the group.

It can be anything, for example:

Hello

The contents of the message are not important. We only need LINE to generate a webhook event originating from the group.

10. Find the Group ID in webhook.is

Return to the browser tab where you left:

https://webhook.is/test

You should now see one or more incoming HTTP requests.

If several requests are shown, open the most recent POST request generated after you sent the message in LINE.

Look at the request body.

LINE sends JSON data containing an events array. Inside the event generated by your group message, look for a source object similar to this:

{
  "events": [
    {
      "type": "message",
      "source": {
        "type": "group",
        "groupId": "C1234567890abcdef1234567890abcdef"
      }
    }
  ]
}Code language: JSON / JSON with Comments (json)

The important part is:

"source": {
  "type": "group",
  "groupId": "C1234567890abcdef1234567890abcdef"
}Code language: JavaScript (javascript)

Copy the complete value of groupId.

For example:

C1234567890abcdef1234567890abcdef

Do not copy the quotes.

This is the Group ID that you will later paste into Nelio Content.

If you see:

"type": "user"Code language: JavaScript (javascript)

instead of:

"type": "group"Code language: JavaScript (javascript)

the event did not originate from a group. Make sure you sent the message inside the LINE group that contains the Official Account, not in a private conversation with the Official Account.

11. You can now remove the temporary webhook

Once you have copied the Group ID, you no longer need webhook.is for the Nelio Content connection.

You may return to LINE Developers and remove the temporary webhook URL or disable Use webhook.

Nelio Content does not use this webhook to publish messages.

Its only purpose in this setup was to let you see the Group ID generated by LINE.

Also remember that services such as webhook.is are intended for temporary testing. Avoid sending sensitive information through temporary webhook inspection services.

12. Generate the Channel Access Token

Now return to:

LINE Developers Console → Your Provider → Your Messaging API Channel → Messaging API

Scroll down until you find the Channel access token section.

LINE may offer different types of Channel Access Tokens depending on the current Messaging API configuration.

Generate or issue a Channel Access Token that can be used to access the Messaging API.

After LINE generates it, you will see a long string similar to:

eyJhbGciOiJIUzI1NiJ9....

Copy the entire token.

Keep this value private. Anyone who has access to the Channel Access Token may be able to use the Messaging API on behalf of your LINE Official Account.

Do not use the Channel ID or Channel Secret in Nelio Content. Nelio Content specifically needs the Channel Access Token.

13. Connect LINE to Nelio Content

You should now have the two values required by Nelio Content:

Channel Access Token
Group ID

Go back to your WordPress Dashboard and open Nelio Content.

Start the process of adding a new LINE social profile. Go to the Settings » Social Profiles tab of Nelio Content and click on the LINE icon.

Nelio Content will display two fields.

Dialog to connect a LINE group credentials to Nelio Content.
Dialog to connect a LINE group credentials to Nelio Content.

Channel Access Token

Paste the Channel Access Token you generated in the LINE Developers Console.

For example:

eyJhbGciOiJIUzI1NiJ9....

Group ID

Paste the Group ID you obtained from the webhook event.

For example:

C1234567890abcdef1234567890abcdef

Then click Test Connection.

Nelio Content will use the Channel Access Token to communicate with LINE and check that the specified group can be accessed.

If everything is configured correctly, the connection test should succeed.

Finally, click Save Changes.

Your LINE group is now connected to Nelio Content.

What is the difference between the Channel ID, Channel Access Token, and Group ID?

LINE uses several identifiers during the configuration process, which can be confusing.

The Channel ID identifies your Messaging API channel inside LINE. You do not need to enter it in Nelio Content.

The Channel Secret is used by applications to verify webhook signatures. You do not need to enter it in Nelio Content either.

The Channel Access Token allows Nelio Content to make authenticated requests to the LINE Messaging API.

The Group ID identifies the specific LINE group where Nelio Content should publish your social messages.

Therefore, the only two values you need to enter in Nelio Content are:

Channel Access Token
Group ID

Troubleshooting

LINE says “You can’t create an account in your current country or region”

LINE Official Accounts are not available in every country or region.

If LINE displays this message while you are creating the Official Account, you will not be able to complete the connection using an account from that region.

Nothing appears in webhook.is

Check the following:

  • The temporary webhook.is URL is correctly entered in LINE Developers.
  • Use webhook is enabled.
  • LINE successfully verifies the webhook URL.
  • The Official Account has been added to the group.
  • Group chats are enabled for the Official Account.
  • You sent a new message after adding the Official Account to the group.

After checking these settings, send another message to the group and return to webhook.is.

I see webhook requests, but there is no groupId

Make sure that the webhook event comes from a group.

The relevant part should contain:

"source": {
  "type": "group",
  "groupId": "..."
}Code language: JavaScript (javascript)

If source.type is user, you probably sent a direct message to the Official Account rather than a message inside the group.

Can I obtain the Group ID from the LINE application?

No. The internal Messaging API Group ID is not normally displayed in the LINE user interface.

The webhook event is one of the easiest ways to obtain it.

Do I have to keep webhook.is configured?

No.

webhook.is is only used temporarily to inspect the webhook event and recover the Group ID.

Once you have copied the Group ID, Nelio Content only needs the Channel Access Token and Group ID to publish to the group.

Should I paste the Channel ID into Nelio Content?

No.

The Channel ID and Channel Access Token are different values.

Nelio Content requires the Channel Access Token, not the Channel ID.
