✨ Generate Tests with Nelio AI
Now available directly within the plugin, this new functionality helps you discover what to test, with data-backed suggestions generated by artificial intelligence. If you’ve ever found yourself wondering “What should I test next?” or “Where do I start to improve my site?”, this feature is for you.
How It Works
Gone are the days of staring at your site wondering what to test next. Let’s see how it works in our example store.
Enable AI Features
Before generating test ideas, you can fine-tune how Nelio AI understands your site by adjusting its initial settings. Head to the Nelio A/B Testing » Settings » Nelio AI section, and make sure the “Enable AI features” option is checked to activate test generation.
Select which content types Nelio AI should analyze when generating test ideas. You can include pages, posts, and any other custom post types relevant to your site.
If you’re running an online store:
- Include WooCommerce store in test suggestions so AI considers product layout, pricing, and sales patterns.
- Share anonymized WooCommerce order data to allow the AI to learn from actual performance and optimize recommendations accordingly.
Finally, you can also choose to include Google Analytics data to further enhance the relevance of AI suggestions using real traffic and behavior data.
These settings help Nelio AI provide smarter, more personalized recommendations right from the start.
Let Nelio AI Suggest What to Test
Now, let’s start with our first AI-generated test!!
When you go to the Tests page in your WordPress dashboard, you’ll now see a new button next to “Add Test” called ✨ Generate with Nelio AI.
Clicking this button triggers our AI to scan your site — taking into account your content, structure, layout, WooCommerce products, optionally Google Analytics and more — and come back with a curated list of test ideas designed to improve your site’s performance.
Each batch of suggestions includes:
- Best Opportunity for Optimization: the single test candidate most likely to generate meaningful results.
- Worth Considering Next: additional candidates that are relevant and valuable to explore.
So, in our example, Nelio AI has detected that we have a top-selling product and optimizing this page has strong potential to boost conversions and revenues. It suggest three different ideas we could test.
What You’ll See in Each Nelio AI-Suggested Test Idea
Each test idea comes with:
- A clear hypothesis
- An actionable recommendation
- The rationale behind it
Let’s take one of the ideas that it suggested. For example, the improving the visibility of the “Add to cart” button by increasing its size and contrast — a classic optimization with real impact on conversions.
From Idea to Execution in Just a Few Clicks
Once you like a test idea, you can choose the test type available for said idea from a dropdown (in our example, WooCommerce Product test, CSS test, JS test, or even a PHP test).
Just pick the one that fits and click on Create Test. In our example, creating a CSS test seems to be the most appropriate way to change the button.
Configure and Launch — in Minutes
Nelio will generate a ready-to-configure test template. The CSS template already includes the title, description, and test scope.
Moreover, as you can seen in the above screenshot, the CSS test template includes the default control version, and a variant that you can edit to implement the Nelio AI’s recommended changes.
In this example, we’re editing the CSS of the “Add to cart” button to make it more prominent. You can do this visually or directly using the CSS editor, both provided by Nelio.
After making the changes to the variant that match the test suggested by Nelio AI, you can now check that you have made them.
Now all that remains, just as you do when creating any test, is to add the conversion actions that our visitors must perform in order to achieve the conversion goal suggested by Nelio AI.
In this case, we want to track clicks on the “Add to cart” button:
We simply enter the CSS selector and every click on that element will count as a conversion. Remember that you can also use the CSS selector editor to select the element.
Once the variant and conversion action are configured, the test is completed. Just click Start…
